What Is EXIF Metadata?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is a standard for embedding metadata inside image files. Every photo taken on a digital camera or smartphone writes a hidden data block containing camera settings, exact timestamp, device identifiers, and โ€” when location services are on โ€” precise GPS coordinates to within a few metres.

Who Needs an EXIF Metadata Viewer

Photographers

Review exact camera settings for every shot. Verify copyright metadata before submitting to stock agencies.

Privacy Users

Check what GPS and personal data your photos contain before sharing publicly. A photo can reveal your exact home address.

Legal & Journalism

Verify photo authenticity and timestamp. Confirm GPS location data for evidence purposes.

E-commerce & SEO

Verify product photos are original. Confirm GPS coordinates match your business location.

Bulk Analysis

Upload 20 photos, export all EXIF as CSV, analyse camera settings across your entire photo library in a spreadsheet.

Travel & Memory

Identify exactly where and when a photo was taken years later using embedded GPS coordinates.

EXIF Privacy Warning

EXIF GPS coordinates are accurate to within 3 to 15 metres. A smartphone photo taken at home and shared publicly can reveal your exact home address to anyone who downloads and reads the EXIF. Always check your photos with this viewer before sharing publicly, then use an EXIF remover to strip GPS if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about EXIF metadata, GPS in photos, and privacy.

EXIF metadata is hidden data embedded inside JPEG files. It records camera settings (ISO, aperture, shutter speed), device info (make, model, lens), exact timestamp, GPS coordinates when location was enabled, and editing software used. Invisible in normal viewing but readable by EXIF viewer tools.
No. This viewer runs entirely in your browser using the FileReader API. Photos are never sent to any server, never stored, and never shared. All EXIF parsing happens locally on your device. Closing the page removes all data.
Yes. Upload up to 20 photos at once. The batch panel shows all with GPS indicators and a summary count. Click any photo to view its full EXIF. Use Export All CSV to download all photos' metadata in one spreadsheet.
GPS is only embedded when location services are enabled on the camera or phone. Many DSLRs lack built-in GPS. Photos shared via WhatsApp or social media often have EXIF stripped including GPS. Editing software may remove GPS on save.
Yes. EXIF GPS can reveal exactly where a photo was taken โ€” accurate to within a few metres. A photo taken at home and shared publicly can reveal your exact address. Always check with this viewer before sharing, then use an EXIF remover to strip GPS if needed.
JPEG and JPG support full EXIF. TIFF also supports EXIF. PNG uses a different metadata system and rarely has camera EXIF. Most smartphone photos are JPEG with complete EXIF when location was enabled.
